from high-end popcorn to garden screens
We’re right in the middle of awards season. In years past, the only way to see a nominated film was to go to the cinema. Although you may want to go to your local cinema to see Encanto Where West Side Story, you can now also watch some nominated films, including The power of the dog, the tender bar and Tick, tick… Boom!, from the comfort of your own home through streaming sites.
But it’s time to raise your movie night game in your living room – not just to follow the Joneses on Instagram, but to bring some real movie theater magic into your home.
Movies deserve as big a screen as you can give them
First, stop streaming premium content on your laptop or tablet. Movies that are Oscars deserve more than a 35cm screen.
If you have a smart TV, you’ll be able to sync your Netflix, OSN Streaming and Amazon Prime apps, meaning you’ll be able to stream movies to the big screen. If you don’t have a smart TV, Apple TV devices let you connect to all major streaming services, including Apple TV+, of course, as well as mirror Apple product screens, so you can watch content directly from your phone or laptop. Google Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV Sticks work the same way and are compatible with Android.
Once you have everything in sync, all you have to do is decide what to eat and what to watch (which we all know is the hardest part).
Step up your snack game
Cinemas in the United Arab Emirates have raised the bar for premium dining experiences, thanks to Vox Cinemas’ Theater Experience and Reel Dine-In. If you’re watching a movie at home, the culinary world is your oyster – you can enjoy a full roast dinner or a sushi feast from the comfort of your couch.
However, if you want to stick to traditional snacks and microwave popcorn just isn’t enough, order some. Vox Cinemas offers an extensive menu of popcorn, nachos, hot dogs, drinks and burgers across the UAE via Deliveroo.
You can also visit Candylicious stores in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah and buy premium Garrett popcorn at Dh40. Flavors include everything from classic butter, cheese and caramel crunch, to truffle, macadamia and caramel cashew. It is also available in reusable boxes.
You can also take it a step further and buy a popcorn machine. These are available on Amazon from Dh50, or you can spend up to Dh2,000 for a vintage-style cart, if your budget allows.
Take the movie outside
Rainy days are rare in the UAE, which makes an outdoor movie night a safe bet. For special occasions, outsource set-up to the Backyard Cinema Project. It costs from 1,200 Dh to rent equipment and it caters to the whole of the United Arab Emirates.
The Dubai-based company offers you a full cinematic experience, complete with a giant screen, projector, theatre-style red carpet, velvet curtain and ropes, beanbags, blankets and popcorn.
The company was started by Hollie Allen during the pandemic as she and her husband were “trying to think of activities…that were safe for Covid”.
“We started looking for drive-ins, but couldn’t really find any, and then we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could have a cinema in our backyard,'” Allen said. The National. “So we started looking for businesses that could come and set up shop in our backyard, but again none of them caused much joy.
“As a family, we already used a projector in our home for movie nights, so we thought there was definitely a market for it here, a company that specializes in cinemas and doesn’t just bring a pop screen -up home,” she says. “We got to work finding and putting together what we wanted it to be… We both worked hard to make sure it created magic and it created some happiness for the families in a such a scary and trying time.”
Allen says home theater facilities are booked for everything from family movie nights and children’s parties, to bachelor and bachelorette parties, sports night and Christmas movie nights.
