Vitra unveils new London home in the Tramshed, Shoreditch

London Design Festival 2022: after a year of renovation, Vitra opens the doors of its new showroom in the heart of Shoreditch

To coincide with the London Design Festival 2022 (September 17-25), Vitra unveils its new London showroom, complete with a refurbishment of the grade II listed Tramshed. The building was originally designed in 1905 by Emmanuel Vincent Harris and served as an electrical transformer station for the East London Tram.

The main entrance to the showroom on Rivington Street

This is the first time Vitra has undertaken a renovation project of this scale and ambition, and the team, led by the company’s creative director of scenography, Till Weber, have respectfully restored the space to put in value of its original characteristics. The building, Weber explains, was designed in a classic mannerist style, with a rough-brick facade introducing a double-height lobby that allowed cranes and machinery to operate in the space. Inside, the company will showcase its contemporary collections – by the likes of Jasper Morrison and Barber Osgerby, who also happen to be neighbors – as well as reissues of design legends and pieces from Artek.

“We approached the project with immense respect,” says Weber, “because it is a pleasure and a privilege to maintain historic buildings and their precious details and rare materials, preserving what is possible, revealing and showing the traces of time instead of covering them up.’ Throughout the space, original features have been kept as close to the original as possible, removing unnecessary elements left over from previous renovations and celebrating the building’s patina.

The end result, notes Weber, is “a reaction to space”, showing how the colorful and modern forms of Vitra’s furniture and objects can interact with a historic environment, old and new enriching each other.

Vitra London Showroom: an eclectic harmony of spaces

Works by Erwan Bouroullec for The Wrong Shop behind the new Abalon sofas by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, launching in spring 2023 and previewed in space for the first time

The structure of the showroom offers a sense of discovery: the large hall space (the center of what is dubbed “The Club”) is interrupted by a silver curtain at its center, creating a secluded, dividing oval space the front area from the back.

To one side, a terrazzo bar (“a common centerpiece,” Weber comments) helps enliven the space, while the opposite side aisle features a showcase of office furniture catering to a wide range of needs – from meetings to workshops to concentration work.

Upstairs, a mezzanine is treated as an aesthetically calming retreat and, as Weber notes, an opportunity to “show off a collage of the Vitra approach to home interiors.” Plants, accessories and works of art (including a new corpus by Erwan Bouroullec for The Wrong Shop) complete the interiors.

On the ground floor, the basement of the building has been transformed to create “The Gallery”, an industrial white box which will be used for exhibitions – and which debuts with a presentation of the classics of Jean Prouve in a new color pallet. Another event and hospitality space (“The Loft”) at the rear of the building will open in 2023.

The opposite aisle presents a showcase of office furniture meeting various needs. The chairs are ‘Fauteuil Direction Pivotant’ by Jean Prouvé (the reissue of a 1951 design), while the shelving system is ‘Kaari’ by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Artek

“We had to find an interior language compatible with the impressive industrial architecture of the Tramshed”, explains Weber. The color scheme chosen for the main space – based on white, dark red and green – echoes the existing architectural colors of the building. “By carefully arranging the furniture selection, we aimed for a new interaction between the existing colors and materials of the historic building and the new elements and furniture from Vitra and Artek.

“This space is an opportunity for us to play, and it offers all of that: we can do a museum-style installation, we can showcase new pieces, and we can offer different ways of looking at focused, communal work. This shows that Vitra can do transverse spaces well. §

The gallery in the basement of the building is devoted to an exhibition of creations by Jean Prouvé reissued by Vitra. The exhibition includes the Kangaroo Armchair (1948, center front row) a newly reissued limited edition of 100 pieces

The showroom’s material and textile library at the back, currently showcasing the palettes that characterize the interiors of the space

The mezzanine, designed as an aesthetically soothing retreat and featuring chairs and shelves by Jean Prouvé, the Polder sofa by Hella Jongerius, the Armchair de Salon by Jean Prouvé (1939) and pieces by Artek including the Tea Trolley 900 by Alvar Aalto (1930). Lighting includes an Akari lamp by Isamu Noguchi (1951) suspended above the space

Ask any Kareena Kapoor Khan fan and they’ll tell you: when it comes to ethnic Indian attire, the actress loves her Manish Malhotra outfits. The designer’s creations, whether sarees, anarkalis or lehengas, have won her accolades time and time again over the years. Not only did she wear the designer’s special suits in most of her films, but she also made sure Malhotra dressed her for her wedding celebrations in 2012. The duo’s friendship is so strong that just days later Kapoor Khan walked the runway for Malhotra in Hyderabad, she stepped out in another festive designer look last night as she attended the after-wedding party for her cousin Armaan Jain and his future wife Anissa Malhotra.

After attending Jain’s wedding ceremony in a sleek Nikasha saree, Kareena Kapoor Khan went all out last night, dancing on stage to one of her most beloved tracks, ‘Bole Chudiyan’, wearing a Manish Malhotra silver gray lehenga that is perfect for any wedding hopper who loves intricately detailed ethnic wear. More details below.

Kareena Kapoor Khan accessorized her pastel lehenga with bold red jewelry

If you thought pastels couldn’t stand out at weddings, Kareena Kapoor Khan’s latest look is sure to change your mind. While the actress’ skirt featured intricate ivory floral embroidery, her blouse, the hero of her look, was covered in rows and rows of delicate glass beads, arranged in layers of tassels that added movement to her look during that she danced with Karan Johar and Karisma Kapoor. on the scene.

A lightweight dupatta in the same shade completed Kapoor Khan’s sangeet look, but the actor made sure to add an unexpected pop of color to his outfit with his jewelry. Instead of going with diamonds or white gold, the star complemented her designer lehenga with a set of uncut diamonds and rubies. She also experimented with her choice of bag, pairing her pastel look with a dark green clutch from Beau Monde.

If you are looking for a stylish sangeet ensemble this season, a beautifully embellished number like Kareena Kapoor Khan’s must be on your list. Here’s how you can catch her look today.

“I was the Tagalong little brother for a period that was kind of ignored, so when I do something artistic, I don’t bring it to anybody like, ‘Hey, that might hurt you a little,'” he says. “No, you’re just going to get your feelings hurt.” Ask for forgiveness instead of a permission type vibe.

The Eternal Story follows JID’s biggest hit to date, “Enemy,” a hard-hitting arena-ready single with Imagine Dragons that peaked in the top five on the Hot 100 and has been streamed over 850 million times on Spotify. “All the while I wasn’t falling and time was passing, I knew we had the Imagine Dragons disc in our back pocket,” he says with a sheepish smile.

He laughs when I point out that he released songs with Sheck Wes and Mos Def in the span of six months, which would seem like a total tonal boost for most MCs. It’s simplistic to say that he tries to bridge the gap between rap trap and more traditional lyrical hip-hop – it’s more that he tries to make the latter style work with the spirit of collaboration that has been the Atlanta brand over the past decade. That’s why he pairs up-and-coming Georgia artists like Baby Tate and Kenny Mason with 21 Savage and Lil Wayne, respectively.

“Kendrick and Cole, we’ve been waiting for them for years to do a project. Why do you think that is? If it was Lil Baby and Gunna, they would have done it three or four times already, but because it’s still a little competitive vibe with lyricism,” he says. “I was like, I don’t really care about that. I feel like I’m better than everyone anyway.

This ability to move seamlessly between styles belies a common criticism of JID that he approaches rap like a running back with only one speed (he played defensive back at Hampton University and says that he “always makes the connection between things and the sport”). There are times on The Eternal Story where he still raps like a prospect breaking records on the agility ladder, but now he’s also added a refined, quietly revealing singing voice. “Kody Blu 31” in particular is a track Christo says they never could have done before JID made that vocal leap.

JID has always been able to carry a melody (he sought out a professional vocal coach when his vocal cords swelled while touring in 2019), but here he sings with confidence and weight, trading blows with his label mate Ari Lennox on the hurt love song “I Can’t Make You Change. The first notes of The Eternal Story include an interpolation of a melody from The story ever “Doo Wop, but now, instead of Sean McVerry singing, JID leads the mix.

“I just wanted to be able to have that on my Swiss army knife. I’m still working on it, it’s something that continues,” he says. “It’s like being an athlete and having speed. You need to continue to maintain that speed and reduce some things that keep you running at that high level.

After our breakfast, JID stopped by his hotel suite to pick up props for his MTV awards package, including a pendant depicting himself as a character from the beloved 2000s cartoon. Ed, Ed and Eddie. Rappers who have their own diamond faces are nothing new…Rick Ross literally has a chain of himself wearing a chain of himself– but JID says it’s the only blockbuster jewelry purchase he intends to make. Though he’s proven he can go bar for bar with the best of them Eternal story, he’s not interested in the traditional cues of rap stardom.

“People want me to say rappers and be that type of artist, but I say, like, companies, family members. Stuff that really bothers me, other artists don’t,” he says “I’m just starting to get over it dissolving my sister. She’s the real beef I have in the world.”

Which fall shower curtain is the best?

As the weather turns chilly and fall decorations fill our homes, swapping out your regular shower curtain for a fall shower curtain can help you savor the season during your daily routine. You can find fall-themed shower curtains with various prints, patterns, and sayings that evoke cozy fall vibes. But choosing the right one for your bathroom can be a bit overwhelming. If you’re looking for a sophisticated yet reasonably priced fall shower curtain, the Shirtacle Harvest Grains & Grasses Shower Curtain is a first choice.

What to know before buying a fall arrest shower curtain

Materials

Fall shower curtains can be made of different materials just like regular shower curtains. The most common material options are linen, hemp, cotton, nylon, polyester or poly-cotton blends, and plastic.

Plastic shower curtains will be waterproof and affordable, although they may not offer the appealing seasonal aesthetic that you may be looking for in a fall shower curtain. Fabric shower curtains provide a more refined look while providing a water resistant barrier across the tub.

Cut

Since fall shower curtains are a seasonal specialty item, they may not come in as many sizes as other shower curtains. However, you can usually find sizes larger than most standard tubs, measuring between 70 and 72 inches wide and long. If you want a seasonal shower curtain outside of these common measurements, be sure to choose one that comes in multiple sizes.

Hanging method

Fall themed shower curtains can have different hanging methods, such as single holes, stitched holes, small holes with metal grommets, or large holes with metal grommets. Curtains with smaller holes require hooks to hang on a curtain rod, while larger holes can be threaded directly onto the rod. Holes with grommets are more durable as the metal acts as a gasket to protect the curtain from rips and tears over time.

Cleaning and maintenance

Like regular shower curtains, fall shower curtains require periodic cleaning to keep soap scum and mildew away. If your shower curtain is machine washable, that’s your best bet. Alternatively, scrubbing with soapy water and a brush or sponge can help refresh your curtain as needed. Since you only take this specialty shower curtain out one season a year, it’s a good idea to clean it before storing it again to prevent dirt or dust from building up during storage.

What to Look for in a Quality Fall Shower Curtain

Unique designs and performance materials set quality shower curtains apart from all others. Along with finding a design that suits your style, a waterproof or water-resistant curtain may be the most important feature when shopping for the best fall shower curtain.

Design and patterns

When looking for a shower curtain that evokes your fondest fall memories, consider your personal design preferences as well as your existing bathroom decor. You can find fall-themed shower curtains in many different shades, prints, and patterns. There are even seasonal shower curtains based on pop culture icons from big name brands. Consider how the curtain will fit into your existing color palette and patterns, then choose a seasonal curtain that complements what you already have.

Reinforced holes

Some shower curtains provide additional structure around the openings for the hooks, such as sewn hems or metal grommets. If you’re decorating a busy bathroom or just want to keep your curtain as long as possible, look for a seasonal shower curtain with durable hook holes.

Water resistance

Although many shower curtains have water resistant capabilities, not all specialty shower curtains are made with longevity in mind. Seasonal shower curtains are more likely to use delicate fabrics to enhance the design because they won’t be hanging in your bathroom all year round. However, finding a shower curtain that matches your seasonal mood and is water resistant will help protect your curtain without requiring additional cleaning and maintenance.

How Much You Can Expect to Spend on a Fall Shower Curtain

Most fall shower curtains cost between $20 and $70. More expensive shower curtains can cost upwards of $100 or more, depending on unique designs, brand names, limited releases, and materials.

Fall Shower Curtain FAQ

Are fall shower curtains available in sizes suitable for shower stalls?

A. Potentially. Shower stalls are generally narrower than bathtubs, so you may need less material to cover them. Some fall shower curtains come in multiple sizes, so you can measure your space and choose the best size. Since these curtains are seasonal, many products are only available in the standard size for bathtubs, so you may need to hang

Should I buy a seasonal polyester shower curtain?

A. Yes, if you want a curtain that is durable, water resistant and easy to maintain. Polyester offers many benefits for a seasonal shower curtain. It is easy to clean and often machine washable. You don’t need a plastic curtain liner because polyester is already water resistant and will work well on its own. It also dries quickly, so you won’t have to worry about mold when you fold it up and put it away for the rest of the year.

After years of minimalism in our homes, there has been a move away from pared-back palettes and a less-is-more approach to rooms rich in color, texture and pattern.

Maximalism means filling your home with rooms you love and creating a space that’s uniquely yours. But it shouldn’t feel messy, and you don’t have to commit 100% if you don’t want to. Best of all, making an impact doesn’t have to cost a fortune. So whether fall is the time to experiment with bold colors and prints, or just to step things up a bit with cozy tones and textures, here’s how to switch up your scheme without starting from scratch.

1. Replace plain curtains with patterns

If you’re worried about committing to aesthetics, it can be tempting to avoid patterns. But used thoughtfully, a little goes a long way – and window treatments are a great place to introduce additional design details, while keeping the look flexible. These subtle Hillarys Amerlia Clay Leaf Pattern Curtains work well with other prints, but are neutral enough to fit into a more subtle palette as well.

Use the slider below to see how patterned curtains can work in both minimalist and maximalist design

Combined with roller shutters to provide privacy while protecting furniture from fading, these floor curtains also add a practical touch. If you need inspiration for transforming your window furniture, there is a wide range of treatments available from Hillarys. Book a appointment at home with an expert advisor, and they can provide advice on style and difficult bay windows, as well as measurement. Your advisor will also take care of the fitting, so you can expect a perfect finish.

          2. Get creative with color

          BRENT DARBY

Much like pattern, the introduction of color is a great way to refresh a space for a changing season. And that doesn’t mean big investments in new furniture – opt for accessories such as Hillarys cushions, vases and throws to add bright pops of color. If you want to take it down a notch, mix in paler versions of your key shade – for example, a soft terracotta cushion and salmon striped throw paired with a coral sofa.

“For a more maximalist finish, just increase the presence of a strong tone, like coral here,” suggests the interior designer Sam Grigg. ‘To keep everything from being too coordinated, introduce the majority of color via patterned furniture. These can also include other accent shades you want to bring.

          3. Increase the texture

          Hilarys

Chunky or sheer, texture is key to any room makeover. “Anything that has more presence in the room will add extra energy,” says Sam. For a warm and cozy vibe, introduce heavily textured stoneware and throws. For a more serene feel, choose a few tactile pieces, like a velvet throw pillow or beautifully woven curtains.

Living rooms can really benefit from Roman shades or curtains in textured fabrics, as they help soften hard surfaces such as glass, concrete or lacquered furniture. You can also bring wood and metal elements with an eye-catching curtain rod from the range at Hillarys.

          4. Warm up your walls

          BRENT DARBY

As the canvas of your room, the tone you choose for your walls will set the tone for everything else. “An easy way to maximize pale walls is to see if the company you used has a more pigment-rich version of the shade you chose,” Sam says. ‘For example, the paint shade in our bedroom maximalist (photo) is Little Greene’s Rolling Fog, so you can check out its color chart for the darker paint if you want to create something even bolder, or a lighter tone for a softer look. This way you won’t have to redesign all your furniture because you know the shades of the paint color will be the same.

          5. Personality Layer

          BRENT DARBY

Personal touches add energy to a room, so finish a look with plants and artwork. “In a minimalist room, I would suggest a print with a simple abstract design, something that fades,” advises Sam. “But in the maximalist home, the art should have a vibrancy. In this space, loosely linking the coral sofa and caramel armchair to the palette of the two artworks, it really ties the room together.

In his new book, “The Designer Within: A Professional Guide to a Well-Styled Home,” interior designer John McClain suggests we ask ourselves, “What would make me happiest when I come into my house?”

Reviewing an advance copy (Gibbs-Smith, $45), I agree. That may be THE question.

What would make me happiest? Coming home with loved ones and pets, of course, somewhere clean and tidy – and pretty. I want to see objects and decals that I love, pieces that my husband and I have collected over time that tell stories.

“I want readers – whether they’re homeowners about to embark on their first renovation or seasoned design professionals looking for new ideas – to leave feeling confident and inspired,” he writes.

Readers will want to give their entire home a makeover after perusing this inspiring 114-page tome, illustrated with photos of McClain’s own home, a “Modern Loft Bungalow,” and his other design projects, ranging from traditional to contemporary.

“I didn’t want it to be just another pretty coffee table book,” McClain told me over the phone from his home in Los Angeles. “What I really want this book to do is start a conversation, a discussion inside your own home that triggers change.”

I was eager to know more.

Q Every designer, including you, says to gather inspirational images from magazines or on a Pinterest board to form the basis of your design. How do you go from this hodgepodge to a design plan?

      A. You are looking for inspiration. When you find something you respond positively to, whether it’s a photo of a room, a rug, an artwork, or a piece of furniture, dig deeper. Analyze why you like it. Is it because it reminds you of a favorite place or makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. The objects in your home should awaken something in you. They must be more than pretty.

Q You tell readers to “be bold”. This is loaded advice. Please advise.

      A. I’m done with people copying what they see in Crate & Barrel or Restoration Hardware. Owners need to express themselves. My favorite way to be bold is through wallpaper, but it can also be through a statement piece of furniture, perhaps an oversized light fixture that acts like a sculpture, or through an unexpected color.

Q Your book has a lot of painted cabinets, but the idea of painting wooden cabinets terrifies me. Isn’t that sacrilege?

      A. Now I will raise you one who cares. Wood is just wood. People say they can’t change that golden oak tree, and I say, “Are you kidding me? Wood cabinets are no more special than painted cabinets. However, when painting cabinets, choose colors that will stand the test of time.

Q Share your secrets to creating a great “shelfie” or tablescape.

      A. When styling a bookshelf or coffee table, must-haves include stacks of books with some sort of “book top,” such as a brass object or any small accent piece on top of the stack to punctuate the table. Then add one to two tall objects and a round object, like a bowl. Mix sizes, shapes, colors and finishes.

Q You argue for a “comfortably chic” home design. How to reconcile these opposing ideas?

A.Chic and comfortable is my favorite design aesthetic. You can choose a chic sofa with beautiful and sophisticated lines and cover it with a fabric so resistant that children can wipe their dirty hands on it. Fill it up to make it more comfortable than expected, while maintaining the same sleek silhouette.

Q How do you make a small space seem bigger?

A.Use chairs and sofas with legs that allow for air space. Clear acrylic chairs take up less visual space, and curtains that start at the ceiling will make rooms appear higher. Don’t be afraid to use large pieces in small rooms. A few large pieces are better than several small ones. A monochromatic color scheme also helps.

Q You talk about a top-down philosophy when discussing how to afford a great look. Where are the best places to save money and where should you invest?

      A. Spend money on items that get a lot of use: couches, coffee tables, dining chairs, beds, appliances, and storage items like dressers. Save on items you use less like lamps, mirrors, accessories, side tables, sometimes area rugs and artwork. Even when I’m working on a multi-million dollar house, I’ll put an expensive, well-made dining table next to a $50 mirror.

Dublin, Aug. 30, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The “Global Digital Textile Printing Market Size, Share and Trend Analysis Report by Printing Process (Direct to Fabric, Direct to Garment), by Operation, by Textile Material, by Type of Ink, by Application, by Region and Segment Forecast, 2022-2030 » report has been added to from ResearchAndMarkets.com offer.

The global digital textile printing market size is expected to reach USD 6.65 billion by 2030, according to this new report. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.1% from 2022 to 2030. Digital printing refers to the process of printing a digital image onto a variety of substrates. Digital textile printing is used to print on a variety of textile materials such as cotton, polyester, silk, nylon and other synthetic fabrics.

Any digitally designed design or pattern can be printed on garments, fabric rolls and other textile items such as accessories, sheets, curtains, rugs, etc. The drawings are generated using software. The printing techniques in digital textile printing are direct-to-garment (DTG) printing and roll-on-roll/direct-to-fabric printing. Fabric pre-treatment is essential in digital printing as it ensures that the fabric retains ink effectively and enables the use of a wide range of colors on the textile.

Digital textile printing is conceived as the “next generation” of printing. Many textile business owners are investing in digital printing technology as fabric printing moves into the modern form of printing. To meet the demands of the new generation, the textile industry around the world is adopting digital printing technology to print new designs on garments and fabrics. Different types of inks are used for digital textile printing. Acid, reactive, dispersion, pigment, sublimation and reactive are the most commonly used colorants for digital printing. These inks are available in vibrant colors and can be used for commercial printing purposes.

The choice of ink differs with each fabric; for example, reactive inks are mainly used on cotton, linen and rayon, dispersion inks for polyester and acid inks for silk and nylon. Compared to traditional printing, digital textile printing has several advantages. The advantages of digital printing include the ability to print multiple colors on a garment at once, the ability to print on multiple garments at once, the ability to print a diverse range of color shades, among others. It also enables accurate, faster, low-volume printing at an economical cost. In addition, the digital printing process is more efficient and economical. Designers and textile companies are therefore increasingly adopting digital textile printing technology.

The textile sector is one of the major sources of pollution. Digital textile printing is a greener alternative to other, more polluting technologies. Digital textile printing is a better alternative as it does not require fabric washing, and therefore less water and energy is used in the printing process. Digital textile printing technology has certain limitations, such as metallic shades cannot be printed with digital technology. Europe held the largest market share of more than 37% in the global market, due to the growing demand for digital textile printing in fashion hubs in Europe, such as Italy and France. Italy holds a significant share of the European market.

The presence of numerous fashion companies in Rome, Milan, Venice and Palermo increases the demand for specialized digital textile printing. Asia-Pacific is expected to be the fastest growing region with a CAGR of 15.1% during the forecast period. This is due to the presence of a large number of textile poles in the region. China and India are the two main contributors to the Asia-Pacific market. Countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam are also emerging as textile market hubs.

If you’ve ever been on TV – and in Washington, that’s everyone – then you’ve been on “makeup.” If you were very lucky, you landed in the chair of an artist named Rose Procopio Barondess.

Rose, as she is known to all, has been reinventing the faces of celebrities and infamous people for over 40 years. From Mikhail Gorbachev to Betty White and Presidents Bill Clinton to Donald Trump, Rose has painted them all and was often among the most in-demand makeup artists because, old hands knew, she would transform them from every angle.

Mind you, there are a lot of wonderful and talented makeup artists in the TV news racket. But Rose is special. Ask Clinton, who signed one of the capes she used to protect clients’ clothes: “Rose – the best gift this side of plastic surgery.” Henry Kissinger wrote, “You did your best. Former White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers genuflected: “I bow at your feet.

Her cape with these and other notable signatories, along with Rose’s fully-equipped makeup bag, will be history on Monday when Rose donates them to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. The museum asked Rose to leave her large toolbox intact, including all of her many stamps, paints, powders, brushes and other supplies. “I never imagined,” Rose told me, “that my makeup would become a historical artifact.” Years ago, it was Tim Russert’s idea that she donate it.

She’s not completely retiring — she still has “special” clients, both private and in the anchor chair. But the pandemic, during which she lost her father, put her professional life into perspective. Now seemed like a good time to part ways with her professional memories.

DC-born Rose got into the business early on, doing makeup for herself and her sisters. She started modeling at 19 but preferred to be backstage rather than in front of a camera. “I had more control over makeup,” she recalls, “and I was better at it than modeling.”

Working primarily with network and cable television — composing Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Katie Couric, Russert, and Chris Matthews, to name a few — she has also traveled the world with talent. During the 1996 presidential race between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, she worked with both campaigns and lined up both candidates.

I have known Rose since my first appearance as a guest on a Sunday show about 15 years ago. Within minutes, she could turn my barely moisturized face into something people would be willing to tolerate in their living room for a few minutes.

For the uninitiated, makeup is essential on camera, not so much to make you look your best – although that’s a bonus – but to make you look alive. Even before the curse of high definition television, studio lighting was so dire that even the best human faces are rendered flat and lifeless without strategic contouring or highlighting.

Let’s be honest; it is dangerous work. You would literally have to go up against celebrities and demanding personalities, several times an hour, day after day. It’s also a strangely intimate job, and that doesn’t make it any easier. As she worked, Rose would laser focus on every pore of your face — which takes some getting used to — and kept her thoughts strictly to herself. But then, I doubt that Michelangelo was talkative in turning a communal ceiling into a Sistine Chapel.

And the people she paints? They don’t necessarily exude empathy. Rose says she came up with ‘breathtakingly handsome’ John F. Kennedy Jr. for Russert’s ‘Meet the Press’ and was told by the show’s producers not to talk to him, not to watch him , not to make eye contact, not to photograph him or ask for an autograph. Rose didn’t say a word until Kennedy asked her about her cape and asked if he could sign it as well. She turned to Russert and asked if he could autograph it. “Of course he can!” Russet shouted. Rose remembers Kennedy, “He was the nicest person in the world.”

Others were often otherwise – either jumpy and nervous or demanding and condescending. The best makeup artists try to make everyone feel comfortable, no matter what the schedule. Rose was a master at this. “I recognized that I’m the last person people see before they go on set, and I try to keep that in mind. Being calm helps them become calmer.

Makeup artists are also great listeners. The makeup room is where people let their hair down, literally and figuratively, and say things they would never say anywhere else. Pre-show jitters probably reinforce this effect. Even some of the most seasoned veterans are still shaken up before the curtain goes up. Live television offers myriad opportunities to say something silly, which you can be sure will be remembered and replayed by the Schadenfreude crowd.

The working assumption is that what you say in the makeup stays in the makeup – and regular guests often mistake artists for their therapists. It made me look forward to his flat memoir, already in the works with the working title, “All Made Up.”

Relax, Washington. Most people who have sat in Rose’s chair need not worry. Above all, we should be grateful, because few of us will ever look as good as we did when she took her cape off around our necks and said, “Okay, you’re set.”
