As hair trends go on, bangs or bangs look tempting but delicate

Around the start of a new year, a sudden emergency twinge is bubbling in the pit of our stomachs for something fresh – and the easiest way to scratch that itch is to get a new hairstyle.

Earlier this week, Princess Sofia of Sweden did just that, showing off blunt bangs as she stepped out with husband Prince Carl Philip in Stockholm on Monday. And she’s not the only one joining the fringe revival (although there is some debate as to whether she wore the look or not).

Stylists in the UAE have seen an increase in clients requesting bangs this winter, but while the look can be flattering, getting the chop is a big commitment, says Jay Crump, owner and chief stylist of the barbershop. Paintbox.

Get the chop

“I have a few clients who are addicted to bangs, but getting your first bangs is a big decision,” says Crump. “When clients ask for bangs, I always tell them to go and think about it. If they come back for their next date and they still want to go, then we will.

For Crump, whose lounge is at the Diamond Business Center in Dubai, his first hesitation comes from personal experience.

“I myself had micro bangs that I cut a few years ago, and it was terrible because I got two bull licks where your hair is lifting,” she says. laughing. “My head looked like a pineapple with hair going in all directions. I had to wear a headband for a year while he was growing up.

For people who are nervous about having their first bangs, award-winning stylist Emily Tucker advises going for “curtain bangs,” which frame the face on both sides.

Tucker, who wears long bangs herself, has seen a marked increase in clients requesting the look at the Hair Signature Salon at Al Barsha in Dubai.

“Curtain bangs are a grown-up version of bangs that are less intimidating than a blunt cut,” she explains. “A lot of people want a change in the New Year, and rather than going full blast, curtains are a good way to introduce style.

“If people like it, they can go for a duller cut next time around, and if not, it’s easy to grow it.”

“Personally, I like to have bangs during the winter months when it’s not that hot,” Tucker says. “This is a good opportunity to wear your hair down on your face without overheating or risking frizz.”

For Bassim Yossif, stylist at We Nails in Dubai Marina, the type of bangs depends on the thickness of the hair.

“There is a triangular bang, a semicircle shape, and a square shape that most of the bangs fall into,” Yossif explains.

“I would advise anyone considering having bangs to go to a professional stylist who can recommend the best look for your hair texture.

“A good stylist can also teach you how to style and maintain your bangs at home, as it can take some getting used to if you’re unfamiliar with the style. “

Celebrity inspiration

As with all celebrity trends, new hairstyles can often come under scrutiny and for Crump, Princess Sofia’s bangs could be styled better.

“In my opinion, there isn’t enough weight in Princess Sofia’s bangs for such a blunt cut and it seems to dominate her face. I doubt that was the look she was going for, ”she said.

“I know Jennifer Lawrence has a lot of stick for her bangs in Do not seek, but the micro-styling can look really quirky and cool if styled well.

While Lawrence’s look was potentially deliberate, to go with his somewhat unhappy character in the movie, Crump says “that kind of bangs definitely don’t wake up like that, and you run the risk of looking like Lord Farquaad from Shrek with such a short and blunt cut “.

In a world where many of us come to the salon with a celebrity haircut saved in our favorite photos, Crump is more familiar with most celeb styles.

“For me, the award for the best bangs goes to Sienna Miller and I always go to her for bangs inspiration,” she says.

“Her bangs have a really nice bohemian look and are versatile so she can wear them as full bangs or on the side.”

Closer to home, Crump counts television journalist and fringe addict Katie Overy among his clients.

“Katie also has really versatile bangs which look gorgeous no matter how she wears them. It’s softened on the sides which gives her a sort of elven look and makes it a lot easier to style.

Style advice

When it comes to styling bangs, timing is key, Tucker says.

“As soon as you get out of the shower, you have to think about drying your bangs or you’ll end up with McDonald’s arches.

“I would recommend using a hair dryer with a nozzle and a medium round brush to get some nice volume and good bounce.

“I would also recommend using conditioner on the bangs as people can forget to give it a little love and often the hair can break, especially if it is highlighted.”

For Yossif, styling vigilance begins in the salon. “Stylists need to make sure they blow dry and straighten the bangs before cutting,” he says. “From there you have to prune it sparingly. You can always cut more, but once you go too far you can’t go back.
